 4040 Multimode
 Flying Probe Tester

 Features back    Minimize

Accessibility Problem is Solved!

With the 4040 Multimode, the distribution of test contact points on both sides of the board does not represent an obstacle for testing. The 4040 Multimode makes contact on both sides of the board at the same time (top + bottom).

While there are 4 fast and precise probes on the top side, the 4040 Multimode adds two additional probes on the bottom side. All six probes are equipped with linear motors with optical encoders positioned on the axes, to obtain the highest performance in today’s market in terms of speed and accuracy.

With the dual-side probing system, the 4040 Multimode maximizes the efficiency of the tester, increasing the productivity.

Productivity Defeats the Cost of Testing!

The 4040 Multimode has been developed to guarantee the highest levels of test productivity which enable it to test high production volume too. It is possible to reduce test development time, and the necessary number of work stations, thanks to its characteristics:

Speed and Precision for testing
The 4040 Multimode is the most versatile flying prober, ideal for testing high production volume, prototypes and new designs, thanks to its test and movimentation high speed.

Fast Programming Speed
The software allows generation of a test program within a few hours automatically, using only CAD data. In-depht knowledge of the board is not required. Using CAD data, test coverage reports provide an accurate report of what is being tested and how it is tested.

Multifunctional Testing
The 4040 Multimode allows the implementation of multiple testing techniques: such as parametric testing, functional, optical testing, Boundary Scan, and OBP using UUT side connectors.

Reduction of Workstations
Diverse types of tests can be performed in a single session, without the need for dedicated equipment.

With the 4040 Multimode high productivity is achieved thereby reducing the cost of testing.

Magnetic Bearings and Linear Motors When technology makes a difference

Using the linear motor technology with magnetic bearings, SPEA has developed the 4040 Multimode: the only flying prober in the world with a comparable productivity to that of a bed-of-nails tester. With an acceleration of 10 g and a maximum speed of 5 m/sec, the 4040 Multimode is capable of reducing the test time by 40% in respect to alternate solutions.

The linear motors guarantee precision and reliability thanks to the fact that probe movement has no parts in contact.
Because of no wear is present, the 4040 multimode does not require mechanical maintenance nor calibration. Precision and speed, without conditions.

Precision deem visible

The 4040 Multimode is capable of making contact even with the latest generation of SMD ultra fine pitch devices. The extreme precision of probe positioning makes the system adequate for testing boards with passive components 0201, 01005, as well as fine pitch and ultra fine pitch IC’s.

Even when test points are not available, the 4040 Multimode is capable of testing the boards. Taking advantage of its capability of making contact with any available point: Throug Hole vias, pads locations, and SMD pads with extremely reduced dimensions (less than 0.08 mm).

The 4040 Multimode guarantees the maximum precision and reliability thanks to its linear motor technology and its optical encoder positioned directly on its axes, which makes the measurement at the actual position of the probe.

The frictionless mechanical movement ensures a continuous precision, eliminating the error attributed to the wear and tear of the components.

Test area up to 686x610 mm (27x24’’)

The 4040 Multimode can take advantage of an area up to 686x610 mm (27x24’’).

The large testing area permits testing boards with large dimensions (for example, Back Panels) as well as multiple boards at one time.

This will be reflected in a significant reduction in handling time.

The 4040 Multimode fits perfectly in your specific production process thanks to the availability of a wide variety of board loading modules – automatic, manual or combined – adaptable for any production requirement.

The automatic loaders don’t require the constant presence of an operator in charge of the loading of the boards to be tested.

4040 Multimode IBL In-Line Board Loading:
Normally integrated in the production line; the board is loaded in an automated way.

4040 Multimode IBL In-Line Board Loading Combined:
That allows mixing the advantages of the automatic board loading to the versatility of the Manual Loading. It is possible to choose to load the boards in manual way, or in automated in-line way. The system can be also equipped with a removable Shuttle mechanism, to obtain the same advantages of the Shuttle Board Loading; in this case, it is possible to equip the system with mechanism for lifting and lowering hte Shuttle mechanism.
The system with the In-Line Board Loading Combined is available in two versions: Pass Through (which is used to integrate the system in the production line) and Pass Back (which is used when the loader and the unloader of the boards are placed on the same side of the system).

The modules of Manual Loading are preferred when the production volumes are not large, or when the boards have irregular shape.

4040 Multimode SBL Shuttle Board Loader:
the loading of the boards is performed outside the testing area; an appropriate mechanism, the Shuttle, transports the board into the testing area. This solution is very ergonomic and allows an easy access to the system and a simple equipping (for example, with contrasts, beds of nails, interface connection, instrumentation for powered functional testing).

4040 Multimode FBL Front Board Loading: the loading of the board is performed directly into the testing area. This solution, in a reduced footprint, allows equipping the system with the Dual Side Probing option.

Integrated On Board Programming

The 4040 Multimode allows the elimination of the need for a Workstation dedicated to device programming, placed after the board testing.

The On Board Programming (OBP) module of the 4040 Multimode can program the devices on the board. The programming can be performed for single components, as well as components in parallel.

The OBP can be used to program test functions specific to the board (Bist or Bost). It can also load the operating software of the product. This way it is possible to have one less external programming station and, at the same time, to cancel the repetitive risks of board handling. The test system works directly, using fixed commands, getting the interacting, followed by the control signals, to erase and program the component.

The programming can be done using specific connectors (for example JTAG) or using the traditional contacts of the bed-of-nails.

Boundary Scan

Testing devices that have no physical access presents no problem to the 4040 Multimode.
Using the Boundary Scan technique the system is capable of testing electronic boards of high integrity and high complexity (for example BGA), verifying the pin integrity of its interconnections even when there is no probe contact.

The 4040 Multimode can be equipped with Boundary Scan software and hardware to perform the applications of this testing technique.

Boundary Scan can be performed with different techniques, depending on the coverage that is desired:

- Infra-structure test (integrity)
- Interconnection test
- Boundary Scan ICT test
- In-Boundary Scan test

The Boundary Scan ICT test is used when the boards are of mixed characteristics, with components of Boundary Scan typology as well as standard components (non-Boundary Scan).

In this case testing requires the use of the probe (fixed or mobile) to force or acquire digital signals simulating the presence of the Boundary Scan components where they’re not present.

The flying probes are actively used in the pattern applications of Boundary Scan to apply stabilization signals, conditioning, or to perform follow up diagnostics in depth for generic errors found in the Boundary Scan chain.

Optical Test

The 4040 Multimode can be equipped with color or black and white cameras to perform optical inspections of the board. It is possible to install up to 4 cameras for the optical testing: two on the top side and two on the bottom.

The optical inspection module permits testing of boards at the same time the electrical testing is executed, thus guaranteeing an increase in productivity that accompanies an increase in the board coverage.

The Optical Test is useful in verifying the non-electrical characteristics of the board, or the configurations electrical testing is complex, such as:

- correct orientation of components (electrolytic capacitors, connectors, integrated circuits)
- character and symbol recognition (such as barcode 2D and device names of ICs)
- presence or absence of components
- solder paste control

Pin non saldati? Open Pin Scan li rileva

The increasing volume of electronic components on a board can result in a increase of process defects, starting from the lack of solder on the component pins.

The introduction of the BGA technology limits the use of the optical inspection but it can be an efficiently substituted by the Open Pin Scan technique.

The 4040 Multimode is capable of using three different test techniques to identify different defects on the card, such as lifted pins on the board (defined as “open pin”):

- Junction Scan
- Current Scan
- Electro Scan

The combined use of the three techniques brings together the effective analysis of defects regardless of the circuit configuration and the component technology.

With the Open Pin Scan technique, it is possible to find other defects on the tested boards, such as wrong polarity, polarized capacitors backwards, connectors mounted incorrectly, RF capacitor presence (stray capacitors).

Leonardo software automatically generates the appropriate test for the Open Pin technique, using the information contained in the CAD as reference.

Nodal impedance Test - NZT

In order to approach the productivity of the bed-of-nails systems a technique called NZT is used.
NZT is a test technique based on measuring the nodal impedance present on each net.

This technique reduces the cost of testing while increasing the quality of the product.
NZT is an excellent tool for reducing the shorts test since each net is tested independently.

Lead Free Ready

The introduction of Lead Free soldering represents a requirement for every production area, in observance of new legislation for the environment.

Still, the technology innovations, the new required processes, together with the continuous size reduction in component packages and the PCB fine pitch devices, can increase board defects.

To guarantee the quality of the product without losing productivity, it is necessary to select a fast and flexible test system, that will be capable of finding new types of defects that can appear in the first years of using the new technology, in any production process.

The 4040 Multimode flying prober is the ideal solution:
Immediately usable at the moment of the installation, easy to use and easy to re-program, the 4040 Multimode allows the development of any type of test.

The extreme precision allows the system to catch more defects than any other test system, making it adequate for any new or existing type of defect.

With the Lead Free Ready technology of the 4040 Multimode, SPEA demonstrates its readiness to face any environmental challenges, and re-affirms SPEA commitment to focusing on the environment.
